What is Aegyo Sal?

(Can you see the difference with and without aegyo sal?)

Aegyo sal (애교살) is a term used in Korea referring to the little fatty deposits under your eyes. The procedure to create them is sometimes called “Korean love band surgery” or “youth-lites”. Aegyo sal is very different from the eye bags one gets from aging or lack of sleep. A typical aegyo sal sits right under the lower eyelid, and they naturally occur in children. It’s existence in young people is the reason some people believe that it can make you look more youthful and innocent.

How do you achieve Aegyo sal?

Should you not be blessed with natural aegyo sal (don’t worry, most people over 20 don’t have them), you can create them artificially. You can achieve them through makeup or the more permanent way (6 months to a year) via an aesthetics procedure. There are several kinds of procedures one can choose from. The popular ones are through fillers, eye fat re-positioning or under eye fat grafting. For fillers, the preferred one is to use Hyaluronic Acid fillers. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a substance that is naturally present in the human body. It is found in the highest concentrations in fluids in the eyes and joints. Hylauronic acid is part of the glycosaminogly family; it’s a complex carbohydrate that’s vital to our well-being. Hyaluronic acid fastens onto our collagen and elastin and creates cartilage. It’s found in every tissue of our body, and is responsible for carrying out a number of vital functions.

And for the re-postioning method, it is mostly recommended for individuals with very big eyebags. Individuals with such conditions would have their existing eyebags removed and repositioned in a way that it does not make them look tired, but instead, gives the appearance of a youthful and innocent look.

Lastly for the fat grafting method, fats from your thigh or tummy area is harvested and treated before they are injected under your eyes to create a natural looking aegyo sal. Of course, none of the above procedures are meant to last forever and you will need to redo them once they are re-absorbed into your body.
